History of Our Club

The Adelaide Zebra Finch Society was originally formed in September 1987
under the name of the Zebra Finch Society (Australia). 

The first meeting to form the Australian Zebra Finch Society, was held at
the YMCA, Flinders Street, Adelaide on Tuesday 8th September at 8pm in Room 8.

An advert was printed in The Advertiser on Saturday 5th September 1987 advising the
proposal to form our club and for any enquiries about joining.

An advert also appeared previously in the S.A. “Budgie Digest” May/June 1987 edition
asking for expression’s of interest in anyone wishing to form a Zebra Finch Society in S.A.

Present at the first meeting were:
J. Hayes, K. Odea, R. Deslandes, Miss R Sharpe, M. Houston,
K. Hocking, R, Gibbons, Mr & Mrs Clifton.

Mr. J. Hayes was nominated as Caretaker President
Mr. K. Odea was nominated as Caretaker Secretary

The reason for the formation of our Club was to promote the Zebra Finch as an Australian Bird.

The first steering committee was held on the 17th September 1987.

The second club meeting was held at St. Johns Church Hall, Halifax Street, Adelaide
on Tuesday 24th November 1987 at 8pm. 
The third meeting was then held on Tuesday 22nd December 1987 at 8pm. 
Future meetings were then held monthly from February to November commencing in 1998.

The first AGM was held on the 23rd February 1988.

Membership Subscription Rates were:

Single - $10.00
Family - $15.00
Junior - $5.00

During our first full year 1988, we had 16 financial members.

In 1998 our name was changed and the Adelaide Zebra Finch Society Incorporated was formed.

Meetings moved to The Northern Woodville Youth Association Hall in Woodville on the 28th June 1988 until 24th October 2006.

Meetings moved to the Sea Scout Hall in Prospect from 28th November 2006.
